Animal Concerns in the Area

Wildlife

According to the PA Game Commission, "wildlife is drawn to homes for a variety of reasons, but the three most common reasons are shelter, food and accessibility, according to the Game Commission. For instance, if your house is the only one in the neighborhood that has wood siding, is on a wooded lot, that has a pool, or doesn't have a chimney-cap, it will naturally be more appealing to wildlife than other properties. Other factors that can lure wildlife to your home or property include: reduced human activity; homes with warped or loose soffit or siding; trailers without skirting or loose skirting; homes with open, un-screened attic windows; improperly stored garbage; and pet dishes with uneaten food."  (2003 Press Release #071-03, PA Game Commission)

What to do if you find an injured animal on your property?

Injured Wildlife
Do NOT touch the animal.  Animals that are injured, especially wildlife, are likely to lash out, claw and/or bite the hand that is trying to help them.

If you cannot reach the LSACAB immediately call the
AARK Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center at (215) 249-1938.  They will be able to advise you of what emergency resources are best given the situation that you describe to them.  Be sure to be clear, calm and give them as much detail as possible.

Injured Domestic Animal (Pet)
It is best for you to call the police before approaching any injured pet that is not yours. Caution is needed when approaching a wounded animal.  When animals are stress or fearful, they can easily lash out and claw or bite the hand that is trying to help them.  This is especially true if the animal is in pain.
